I hate to break it to everyone...but the anime is catching up to the manga pretty freakin fast.
<Possible spoilers! Avert your eyes if you value being unspoiled!>
Usually, at least, in the past, the anime has stayed at least one to two arcs behind the manga, creating a wonderful little buffer for Kishamoto to work at.
Now, the anime is coming dangerously close to being on the same arc as the manga (The two years later). That's a helluva lotta pressure.
I think we'll be seeing a few more filler bits before Kakashi Gaiden, or, at least before they get into the new manga arc.
This isn't to say I don't wanna see the Kakashi arc, I just wanna have the buffer maintained. Plus, I kinda like the filler stories. They fill in tiny plot holes and tidbits of fanservice that I so sorely want ^_^

But they also severely mess with the plot of the main story. Were they to exist as, say, dream sequences or - like the movie - outside the plotline, I would enjoy them alot more.

Mess with the plot line?! ...yeah, that's probably true ^^;; But I think it helps to add a little emotional motivation for our characters as well...helps to flesh out the story a bit. For instance- <spoiling spoilers!> -geez...didn't hafta cut me off like th- <SPOILERS!!! WAAAAAH!> -at...geez...=_=;; Take the Tea country filler for example: It provided a nice little bit of history and coverage of characters who've past in the series (The rain nins, Ibiki). But the biggest thing it does is further Sasuke's doubt in himself and his hatred of Naruto's progress. This makes his challenge to Naruto all the more poinient. The Rice country filler, if anything, is what's going to make Sakura decide to become Tsunade's apprentice. She'll recognise both her need to become stronger as well as her potential. I love the fillers...they do what they promise: Fill.
