It's fairly easy to find a Wii around here.... I'LL BUY YOU ONE TWINNIE. I'd recommend this game as the second in the series. I'd start with the first one, because the tracklist is very good for new players... nothing beats that first hit of "I Love Rock And Roll". However, I do recommend Guitar Hero 3 eventually, yes. It does make a good first game, I suppose... but it's good to see it in it's best light; how it improves on gameplay from the prequels. So if you're not thinking of getting the first one at all, GH3 is a good choice anyway.

Rock band is better as a party game, from what I've heard, but Guitar Hero seems to be a better game to just rock out. That's going purely on hearsay, mind, and my experience of having played like three songs on Guitar Hero III, but yeah. It makes sense, I suppose, if you think about it. At least to me.
Anyone else want to give any feedback?

I'll give feedback. Rock Band sucks. lol. Only because it won't ever be released here... um..... really, I don't know when. There is no release date for Australia/New Zealand so far. Seriously. Anywhere. It's coming out on 360 at the end of May.... but there's no date for ANY of the other consoles. People are looking at... September sometime for PS3. I will be getting a PlayStation 3 soon. When I get it, I plan to get Rock Band too - it looks like a very good game, actually. I'll tell you how it goes when I get it. XD Also, some new/old information.... this games is actually out on PS2 - in the States, at least. Given how stripped down the game is on PS2 though - it doesn't have any of the cool features and modes that the next-gen consoles have - I wouldn't recommend it for PS2. It's like, Guitar Hero with multiple instruments - which may sound like an odd comment... but Rock Band has multiple functions that differentiate it from Guitar Hero, so it's very much a different game. Plus... no downloadable content on PS2!

I recently ordered and received my very own copy of Rock Band. I've played through the game, and it's very excellent.
I'll be having a 'Rock Band party' at my place next week. I've played it multiplayer with one other and that seemed pretty fun... so I can only imagine the fun multiplies when even more people are around.
I'm mainly strapped for time, though, so I'll write a review about it after next week.
Quick notes, though...
* The guitar's not as bad as I initially thought. I'll concede that it does take some getting used to, as the guitar doesn't click, so you don't get any feedback as to how fast you're strumming, etc. But it's larger and feels like less of a toy than the Guitar Hero controller. It's a 3/4 replica of a Fender Stratocaster. I'm disappointed in the choice.... but it feels very good in the hand.
* The drums are... roughly what I thought they'd be. Perhaps slightly better. One can't help but think that you're playing a set of toy drums. Nevertheless, some of the beats are very tough (I play Hard/Expert drums), and it's fun to play along with the bands you love.
* The song choice is excellent... once you hook up to the Internet and handle some downloadable content. That's not to say the initial playlist is bad... but it's fairly average. Once you boost it with some songs (from a HUGE collection... I've added about 20-25 songs to my collection and I haven't downloaded even HALF of the DLC)... the playlist is near impossible to beat. Harmonix have got this part sorted... because they keep releasing new DLC every week. Sure, perhaps they only release three or so songs... but over the course of the six months this game has been out, that's a substantial amount of music!
I'll post more when I have time... curses to work!

Oh, it'll be the Tuesday.
I seem to recall you'll be up the country. And well... it's all good either way. It's rare that you get to come and see me... but it's even rarer that you get to see your girl, too. So either which way, dude, it's all good. Though, if you DO manage to make it, that'd be great.
You could always kidnap her down here... school be damned. XD

So, it's Wednesday today, which indicates that yesterday was the very same Tuesday Sorien and I were discussing above. Having now more fully explored Rock Band, in particular how it fares in its party setting, I can now give a more accurate review of the game - which in turn, provides a little more to this thread started so long ago.
-----
Rock Band is an amazing game. While single-player the game is very similar to Guitar Hero, it's quite obvious that multiplayer is where this game shines. I'm pleased to report that the recent Rock Band party was... surprisingly, to be honest... a resounding success. Those who aren't into Guitar Hero still found enjoyment with the game by singing... and it goes without saying that the drums are a fairly popular instrument. XD It's perhaps the most inviting of the instruments - also perhaps the most alienating at the same time, due to the coordination required to man the set.
Nevertheless, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that everyone last night got into it and enjoyed the game thoroughly. There were about seven or so of us, and we mostly jumped around each of the instruments... it's just, a really great way of bringing folks together. Granted, the Wii generally does this with most of its games... but still.
* Band World Tour mode - the multiplayer career - is pretty cool. There's more to it than working your way to the bottom of a list. Sometimes you see what songs you can play... sometimes YOU GET TO PICK the songs you want to play... and sometimes, you don't get to see what songs you play until you start. It's refreshing, in comparison to just working your way from top to bottom. Our band have done pretty good so far.... but we've still got a long way to go before we hit the big-time!
* The best thing about Band World Tour, I'd have to say, is that you can actually change the number of people in it. So you can technically start with two people, then when more people turn up increase the band roster to the maximum of four... and then when people start to leave, reduce the size of it again. You create your characters, and then can swap them in and out of the band as you please. So it's kinda cool, as it means you can continue the band career when others have gone home... so long as, of course, you have more than one person.
* The only problem with the game is that it really is determined by the tracklist - generally, if the vocalist or drummer can't land the song, there might be some issues. XD However, due to the large amount of downloadable content for the game... there's generally something for everyone, and one can always go scour the online store for more.
There isn't really much more to say about it. It's just a really good game, and will surprise even the most skeptical. Even my parents would look on and watch us while me and my friends jammed. I think it's even got a couple of my mates sold on the game, who'll probably buy it when it comes out -- in the mean time, they're fairly keen on visits over to my place when I'm free. XD
-----
Looking back now, I'm not sure where I'd place my vote. I'm not saying Rock Band is ginormously better than Guitar Hero III... there isn't really a clear winner. Both games do what they set out to do. I'd be one to say that Rock Band has the slight advantage when placed in a party environment, as this is where the real gold is at. I think it might also have the advantage with the continuous stream of downloadable content coming in. But if I were aiming to compete online against someone else, Guitar Hero III has a better interface for going head-to-head.
In my opinion, I guess... Rock Band wins. Perhaps not by a great amount... but it wins. XD
---
In other news, Guitar Hero World Tour is set to come out later on in the year - following suit with drums and vocals as well as guitar. Will it eclipse its rival? Only time will tell...
Are there any other opinions out there? Has anyone else had the pleasure of taking part in Rock Band?

True? Sounds like I missed a good party. I think I'd enjoy the drums. I'm a little un-co at some things, but I reckon I could give them a go eh? Still, there's always next time ne?

Yes, I think I like Rock Band better. Simply because of the versatility. If you get bored or frustrated with one instrument, you can swap to another. It has the major disadvantage of not being an easily transportable game for group get-togethers and such though.

Next time sounds good dude. XD
Actually.... as the owner of the game, I have to dock some points off Rock Band. In my excitement, I'd forgotten the MAJOR problem with it... an issue which, even for me, heavily marks the points down - the price.
For all its excitement, the game is not cheap. Here in New Zealand, you're looking at three times the price of an ordinary PlayStation 3 game, just for the Special Edition (drums, guitar and microphone). On top of that, you have to purchase another guitar (easily done through Play-Asia) for the ideal experience - which comes to US$70, not including shipping (add maybe another $30). THEN, once you have all of this, the game itself is only good - it doesn't truly excel until you drop some cash on the downloadable content. To get a decent amount of downloadable content would cost, maybe US$50.
All up, you're looking at about NZ$700... just to play ONE game! That's a very expensive game, is it not?
On top of that... the ideal experience includes lots of people. I guess that's an excuse to have lots of parties... but if you're more of a solo player, it's something to take into consideration.
I'll admit that yes, it's a fantastic experience. But it does come at a price... perhaps a price to knock it back down to the same level as Guitar Hero III. Rock Band, while being a money-sink, is a great game if you can afford it.

Well, let's take a look at my spendings on the game so far (New Zealand currency)... Game: $450. No kidding. Guitar+shipping: $100 Downloadable content: $50, perhaps? So.... $600. I might go back and change my post to reflect that... but still. $600 for a game? And then of course, if more downloadable content comes out later that I want, I'll have to fork out for that too - to buy all of the downloadable content that has been released so far, WOULD probably put the price up to $650, closing on $700. That's a bit much, in the scheme of things; unless EVERYONE gets immense enjoyment out of this SINGLE PRODUCT, that's a very hard price to justify. I suppose I bought it with the hope that people might want to play it. I'm glad to see that hope wasn't wasted. On a side note... I believe in these frequent visits to my house, dear Sorien. I think everybody does... especially now that I have my new electronic love. XD

TWINNIE AND THE LORDS OF UNDERWORLD! XD <3 Kiri? These three things from Orient are: (lol) * Online for these games are funny. I'm fairly good at Rock Band/Guitar Hero. We all know that. XD I've gone up against some people online... and they're not very good sports. I've played numerous games where halfway through the first song, my opponent will quit because I'm beating them. It gets a bit frustrating when all you wanna do is play some 'Tallica and they quit just as it gets to the really difficult guitar solos. But there are some good opponents out there. I haven't really lost a match yet - I've only ever lost once at ONE song, and it wasn't by much. * My parents have given the game a whirl! LOL. Even though Dad can play guitar fairly well, he finds the game takes a bit of getting used to... but endlessly fun. I guess I started out good not only because I play guitar, but because I'd been fairly good at DDR and Amplitude as well - I was used to notes scrolling down the screen, etc... whereas Dad hasn't really had much to do with those sorts of games. I'm sure given time, though, he'd be awesome like me. XD For now, he sticks to medium/easy (main difficulty medium, harder songs on easy). ... My mother's actually surprisingly good at the game - she plays medium/easy. She prefers bass guitar, because she prefers being fairly rhythmic with the guitar strumming... She mainly wants to play the rhythm part, but because you have to play what the game tells you to play and when to play it, she can't quite do that. Off-beat timings and such things. However, once she started on bass, she got the hang of it really quickly. * Sorien, Weezay, and anyone else that can make it... I'm planning another Rock Band get-together for Tuesday July 22 at my place. Is this an okay date for y'all? Esmess me. ;D That is all.

You're all getting some more posting from me. --- I downloaded some track packs for Guitar Hero 3 (at long last!); I'm pleased to say I got the Virtuoso Track Pack and the Dragonforce Track Pack. Virtuoso: Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien, Steve Vai - For The Love Of God, Buckethead - Soothsayer. Brings back some very fond memories for me and my father, who've grown up listening to Satch and Vai. These songs are, of course, some of the most difficult Guitar Hero's offered so far. I was surprised to find Satriani's song was actually the EASIEST - in typical Buckethead fashion, I cannot pass Soothsayer and am not sure if I ever will. I'll need to buy GH3 to practice it, instead of borrowing it off workmates and the like. XD Dragonforce: Heroes Of Our Time, Operation Ground and Pound, Revolution Deathsquad. Also a trackpack I was looking forward to. Since before even Guitar Hero 3 came out, I've always thought Operation Ground and Pound would make a great 'ultimate song', so when it was announced for GH3, I was quick to pick it up. Very fun... though of course, difficult to pass (I think Operation Ground and Pound is the only song I've passed from this pack). Even Dad was pleasantly surprised to see Satch and Vai on the game. He heard me playing Buckethead - Soothsayer, and asked if he could have a turn afterwards (on medium). When he finished the song, his eyes quickly scanned the list of songs available to play... and he darted straight for Satch. This track pack is seriously awesome. Difficult to 5-star, but awesome. XD --- Furthermore, Kagemaru and I have been playing large amounts of Rock Band, together I'm pleased to say. My father now plays the game on Expert, which is a long way from the initial Medium standard he used to do when he started. Sure, there are some songs he can't pass on Expert - like Metallica and some of the really top tier stuff... but he can usually pass those songs on Expert bass, so he's not doing too bad. Plus he plays quite regularly, so he's pretty good - easily one of the better GH/RB players I know (locally/in real life I mean). I imagine a feeling of hope wells up in the hearts of the audience when the Adarakis take the stage... and perhaps within the band too! XD Good times.
