Next major event:
Guitar Hero World Tour vs. Rock Band 2
That's right, coming up in the next month or two will be the next battle in rhythm gaming - the latest from the Guitar Hero franchise, against the next outing from Harmonix: Rock Band 2!
Guitar Hero World Tour
* The next game in the Guitar Hero series finally steps up to the precedent set in Rock Band by adding microphone and drums to the mix. For the first time in Guitar Hero history, join three other friends to complete the full band lineup.
* New guitar controller - larger and more realistic controller, with a touch pad that allows you to alter notes (raise and lower pitch, slide your fingers along it similar to slide guitar, and more) and a button to more easily activate Star Power.
* Drum controller - Bash away on a wireless six-piece drum set. Three pads, two elevated cymbals and a foot pedal elevate the virtual drumming experience to new heights.
* Create your own music with the Advanced Studio mode - using this mode, you can build your own songs from the ground up. Once completed, they can be uploaded to the Net to share with your friends and the world!
* A new updated Boss Battle mode - enhancing the GH3 battle mode to focus less on weapon powerups and more on getting to the end of the song, which is what the first battle mode should've been about. The weapon mode is still available for multiplayer games if you wish.
* Possible playable characters include - Jimi Hendrix, Billy Corgan, Hayley Williams, Ozzy Osbourne and Ted Nugent. Taking it a step further from Legends of Rock, World Tour will up the number of famous musicians you can choose from.
* Features up to 85 songs, the most on disk in any Guitar Hero game to date.
* Also includes a Beginner mode, which makes things severely easy for those among your friends who aren't 'rhythmically inclined'.
Track list highlights include:
Michael Jackson - Beat It
Blink 182 - Dammit
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher
The Eagles - Hotel California
Linkin Park - What I've Done
Paramore - Misery Business
Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
Tool - Parabola, Schism
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Metallica - Trapped Under Ice
(the following songs are also available in Rock Band 2)
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
Rock Band 2
* The next game in the Rock Band franchise picks up where it left off, only bigger and better!
* New drum controller - while looking similar to the original Rock Band drum controller, the new drumset comes with a reinforced metal kick pedal and wireless capabilities. Furthermore, it comes with slots for cymbal expansions, giving you the ability to add more drums to your set - complete your four drum pads with three cymbals, giving a more authentic and realistic drumming experience.
* Guitar controller - the Fender Strat is back with a vengeance this time in a sunburst colour scheme, quieter buttons and a more responsive strum bar.
* The different game modes have all been amalgamated into one grand Tour Mode, which encompasses both the single-player and multiplayer aspects. This means your friends can jump in any time you please and continue on your quest for stardom.
* Create-a-character has been updated so that you can create a single character, and shift them between instruments as you please (as opposed to creating a separate character for every instrument). This should be great for those of us who are multi-talented. Your created characters can also be used as the default musicians for each of the instruments.
* Backwards compatible with ALL Rock Band 1 downloaded songs. There is also a feature to export 95% of the songs from the Rock Band 1 game disc for use within Rock Band 2 (only three songs have been confirmed not to be available to export to RB2)... this means up to 150 songs playable, if you have the first game. For those who've hoarded all the downloadable content, this means up to 500 songs will be playable, pretty much out of the box!
* Instruments are also backwards compatible with Rock Band 1 and vice versa. Furthermore, the Rock Band 2 instruments will be compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour (and vice versa).
* Extra modes include - Drum Trainer, which allows players to practice many different beats, Fill Trainer, teaching players to perform better drum fills, and Freestyle Mode, which allows players to freeplay drums over the MP3s on their console (can anyone else say "ROCK TO DREAM THEATER!"). Also included is a No Fail Mode, allowing your beat-retarded friends (LOL) to play without bringing the whole band to a screeching halt.
* The PlayStation 3 version will also support Trophies. It is expected that the 360 version will have achievements... but I don't have a 360.
Track list highlights include:
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Metallica - Battery
Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
System Of A Down - Chop Suey
The Offspring - Come Out And Play
Disturbed - Down With The Sickness
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
Presidents of the United States of America - Lump
Tenacious D - Master Exploder
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Linkin Park - One Step Closer
Dream Theater - Panic Attack (ZOMFG)
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Paramore - That's What You Get
Billy Idol - White Wedding
Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know
---
The battle intensifies this time 'round with the sequel games. Place any thoughts you want here... maybe even which you think you'd be more likely to enjoy. Go find the tracklists on Wikipedia and come back here telling us what you think!
As for me... being a follower of Rock Band, I'll most definitely be picking up Rock Band 2. I'm not sure whether I'll get the new drumset or guitar (probably the drumset though, those cymbal expansions are looking pretty cool!)... but I will most definitely be picking up the game disc, as I can export all my Rock Band 1 songs for use in Rock Band 2. While I don't have all of the DLC, I can safely say I'll have over 200 songs for Rock Band 2 when it comes out.
I'd also be one to say Harmonix will continue their trend of releasing three tracks a week, minimum. Once I looked at the PlayStation 3 version of Guitar Hero III, I was sorely disappointed at the amount of DLC that came out for it - I've only ever bought six songs for GH3 (Dragonforce and the Virtuoso pack of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Buckethead). Compared with the 50 odd songs I've added to my Rock Band library... hopefully Guitar Hero World Tour will come out with a stronger online component.
I might pick up the Guitar Hero World Tour game disc, though. This'll give me some extra songs to play... but having said that, I wonder if I can justify NZ$100 for about ten good songs. Man, if the recording industry could ripoff its customers that well, it'd never cry about piracy again!
But we'll have to wait and see. I don't intend to place any bets this time and fanboy over one particular game. We all voted for Guitar Hero III the first time around, and we all know how things changed the second we all played Rock Band. XD
Mind you... with another Dream Theater song in Rock Band 2 - the first DT song being Constant Motion, as DLC in RB1 - can anyone say "HARMONIX TAKE MY MONIEZ"?
Edit: Since originally posted, Activision have released the full tracklist for Guitar Hero World Tour. So GH:WT have some Dream Theater too... good to see. XD I'm still probably going to get the RB2 set (add the cymbals too), but pick up the GH:WT game disc.
