"Do you have any skills at all? You're wearing a head protector," she couldn't seem to identify the village symbol. "You're not from around here are you."
Kuro felt a pang of sympathy for a moment. That's what you get when you get older; hormones. She pushed the feeling away. "Like I said, only Miyoko is here that can help you. I could take you to her..."

"...a-ah.." Bandaged fingers reached upward to adjust the protector instinctively. BAKA!! You forgot to take it off again!! "..Gomen...it is nothing...my...father made it for me....and no, I am afraid I do not possess any skills at the moment, nor am I 'from around here'..gomen..." The situation had fast grown uncomfortable, as his weight shifted from one foot to the other yet again.
"...I would greatly appreciate assistance in reaching this...Miyoko-sama, Tsuta-sempai." The young man bowed as much as the great bundle would allow, mist-grey eyes never rising higher than her feet.

Kuro raised an eyebrow. She studied his outward appearance more closely. He really was quite dirty.
"Ok, whatever you say. Just follow me then..." she hesitated before motioning him to follow her toward the heart of Konoha.

Utsuro nodded silently, shuffling behind her as she led the way. "..thank you again, Tsuta-sama..." ~~~~ The duo traversed for some time down the streets of Konoha, as Utsuro did his best to memorize the locations and pathways to avoid troubling anyone else for directions. Ichiraku Ramen...he thought, chastising his stomach for its inaudiable growl. No money ...Soldier pills for lunch again..an introspective sigh drowned out the quiet grumbling. For his part, the journey was made in silence. By no means a talkative, sociable person, any words he would have said belonged either in the 'gratitude' or 'appologetic' genre. Regardless, she did as was said, and the young man found himself standing outside the building in which the Hokage's office...and this Miyoko-sama..could be found. Offering an irritating, but quiet mountain of both thanks for her assistance, and appologies for taking up so much of her time, he shuffled his way inside.

"Kyaaaaaaaa!" Miyoko sighed in the middle of a yawn. "This is so boring! How on earth does Kaori do it?" An origami butterfly fluttered lazily about the office, powered by her chakra. Eventually she brought it to rest on her hand, red-lacquered fingernails gleaming dangerously in the light from the window as she turned her hand to admire the creature before sending it about the office again. "Hmm..." she wondered softly, as though she were about to fall asleep. "I wonder if I could turn that into a jutsu..." Suddenly a knock came at the door, causing the Jounin to jump nearly out of her chair. The butterfly, chakra link broken in Miyoko's surprise, fell to the desk, now nothing more than a folded bit of paper. Will I never rest? she wondered irritably. Still, at least I won't be bored. I hope."Come in," she called lazily. ((OoC: In case you wanted to reference it, this is what Miyoko looks like. Currently she has her flak jacket off, and is lounging about in the Hokage's office with her bare feet (well, bare except for bandages) up on the desk.))

After recieving several doubletakes and/or odd looks from the building's staff, Utsuro had finally managed to stammer out why he was there, and recieved directions to the Hokage's office. Several attempts at knocking later, the timid young man had finally managed to produce enough noise to garner acknowledgement.
"Come in," The voice from beyond the door beckoned lazily. Making his best attempt to dislodge the mountain of anxiety dwelling in his throat, he swallowed hard and gently pushed the door open, slowly entering in such a manner to suggest he was trying not to be noticed. ...here we go....
Utsuro froze. The woman behind the desk was...in lesser words...stunning. His mind reeled, as her bandage-clad body left him torn between appologizing for whatever incident had left her so damaged and appologizing for staring. Slate-grey eyes immediately dove for the floor, and the quiet boy became even more so. I love this place already!!

Whatever boredom Miyoko had been suffering from vanished as soon as the young man entered her office. Her legs slid off the desk and her feet thudded to the floor as she leaned forward to fix her intense gaze on her latest visitor. She recognized that forehead protector, though she'd never seen one before, and that flak jacket.... whoever this kid was, she needed to stay on guard.
She betrayed none of this externally, though. She had long ago learned when to show emotion and when not to. Long fingernails clicked rhythmically on the desk as she drummed her fingers on its wood surface. "Well, well, well," she said in her sultry voice. "What have we here? Come in, young man, and let me get a look at you. What's your name, and to what occasion do I owe your visit?"

"Well, well, well, What have we here? Come in, young man, and let me get a look at you. What's your name, and to what occasion do I owe your visit?" The tone of her voice...there was something...compelling about it. Even the normally-obedient Utsuro was quick to meet her request, shuffling away from the door, despite the well-practiced 'flee!!' reflex screaming at the back of his head.
Eyes still firmly decided upon memorizing the wood-grain pattern of the floor, he began to speak in his usual hushed manner, wanting to answer her questions, but not wanting to disturb her.
"..Utsuro. Tsutomegi Utsuro, Miyoko-sama.." Again, the bundle upon his back prevented a proper bow, but he still tried his best. "...it...was my hope....to apply.......to the Konoha Academy.."

"...It...was my hope....to apply.......to the Konoha Academy.."
The drumming of her fingers ceased as soon as Miyoko heard that. "Is that so?" she asked, though not with hostility, and not expecting an answer. "You can put that thing down, by the way," she told him, gesturing with a long-fingered hand at the insanely large bundle on his back.
It was a moment before she spoke again. "You put me in an awkward position, Utsuro-kun," she said finally. "As you may have heard, I'm not the Hokage. That position belongs to my teammate, Tensei Kaori, who is currently away taking care of some diplomatic matters. It's true that I was left in charge by her official command, but even then my power only goes so far. Letting outsiders into the Academy is not something I have the authority to do.
"But that aside," she continued with a sigh, leaning back in the chair and gazing at him over the fingertips she now drummed against each other, "it's not too common that an outsider comes to us with this kind of request, especially... outfitted as you are, if you will.
"Tell me, Utsuro-kun. You wear a forehead protector of another village, yet come to Konoha seeking to enter our academy. Why not train at your own village?"

The bundle sent a slight tremor through the room as it was set on the floor, its contents shifted slightly with a disharmonic array of noises. Listening intently to her words, his heart began to fall even further.
"It's true that I was left in charge by her official command, but even then my power only goes so far. Letting outsiders into the Academy is not something I have the authority to do." ...All that distance.... His train of thought was derailed as she continued on.
"But that aside," she continued with a sigh, leaning back in the chair and gazing at him over the fingertips she now drummed against each other. He felt like a piece of meat being judged, shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "it's not too common that an outsider comes to us with this kind of request, especially... outfitted as you are, if you will."
"Tell me, Utsuro-kun. You wear a forehead protector of another village, yet come to Konoha seeking to enter our academy. Why not train at your own village?" Panic overwhelmed his mind...it was dangerous, but he had to tell her.
Though his body did not betray his attempts to hide his sorrow, his eyes spoke volumes as tears welled up. "....my village....was destroyed....I am the only one left...."

Upon hearing his reply, Miyoko leaned forward and placed a firm yet gentle hand on the young man's shoulder. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice rich with sincere sympathy.
An entire village wiped out, she thought to herself. This will need to be investigated more closely.
"That brings me to my next question," she said more gently than she had spoken earlier, leaning back in the chair once more. "And that is, your flak jacket. How did you come by such an unusual amalgamation of craftsmanship, worn and pieced together as it is? And how did you find your way here? Since the two are connected, I'll let you answer both pieces at once, if you wish."

"That brings me to my next question," Her tone had softened, and she seemed to relax a bit. As pessimistic as he tended to be, that still bode well. "And that is, your flak jacket. How did you come by such an unusual amalgamation of craftsmanship, worn and pieced together as it is? And how did you find your way here? Since the two are connected, I'll let you answer both pieces at once, if you wish."
He thought for a moment. "...I have been travelling for...the past 7 years....money has always been scarce for me....I learned to patch my own clothes, with what was available....junkyards...fallen shinobi on the battlefields....I took only what I needed to survive, though." Hoping she wouldn't take offense to that, Utsuro continued on, answering the second. Reaching into one of the many pockets on his person, he produced a heavily-worn scroll of parchment, and unfurled it to reveal a map of the known world, with each 'Hidden Village' marked. "....this is how I found my way...It was in my village."

Miyoko thought for a few moments before speaking. It wasn't like Konoha to just turn anyone away, nor could she let him join the Academy without the Hokage's express order - and Kaori would want to talk to him first, even if Miyoko could just let him in. At the same time, she was sure by this point that Kaori would want to talk to the boy anyways, regardless of her decision. Plus, he had been all the way here; they couldn't just let him leave. He was still an outsider, and as such Miyoko regarded him with caution.
"I'll offer you this," Miyoko said at last, her heavy and serious tone driving home the impact of her words. "I cannot let you join the Academy of my own power, that much you already know. However, nor can I just send you away for that very same reason. That decision is up to the Hokage, as you well know. Therefore, this is what will happen." Her voice made it clear that her "offer" was not one to be declined.
"You may stay here in Konoha, in the guest quarters which we keep for those who come to request missions from us. You will be watched, mind, and I won't tolerate any troublemaking. Consider this a chance to prove the sincerity of your request. As for that, the Hokage will be back at the end of the week. I'll set an appointment for you to see her, and to present your request to her directly. After that, a decision will be made. Are we agreed?"

It took a moment for this to register. So accustomed had he become to failure and rejection, her words left him dumbstruck. There was still hope...and yet...her tone of voice...no longer compelling, but demanding. For some unknown reason, she wanted him to stay.
Utsuro's forehead practically broke through the floor, his bow was so deep. "..T-thank you, Miyoko-sama...I...I shall stay out of trouble, I promise." He only prayed that he could keep that promise. While not one to make trouble, it always seemed to find him.

Miyoko nodded. "See that you do," she told him as she opened a drawer and pulled out a sheet of paper and a pen. "Tsutomegi Utsuro, right?" she asked. When he replied in the affirmative, she began to write.
"This paper confirms your status as a guest of Hidden Leaf Village," Miyoko explained, "so keep it with you at all times. If anyone has a problem with your presence here, they can take it up with me." Leaning across the desk, she handed it to Utsuro-kun. At the bottom of the page, an elaborately stylized butterfly accented the calligraphy-like script of her signature.
"I don't know the kanji spelling for your name," she continued, "so I had to spell it phonetically. Anyways, there's one more thing I require of you before I can let you leave."
