Actually, I have an idea for the Chuunin Exam (this post follows on from another thread... see A Gift To The Sand)...
How about as an extra added bonus, the three Kages each suggest a champion to participate in a special bout midway through the exam?
This could be where things turn nasty. I don't know what Raikage's plan is... depends if we want to have a "normal" Chuunin exam or not (normal being... no interference). If we want to have a "normal" Chuunin Exam, this might not be a good idea (still could be though, but most likely not).
Perhaps, during this bout, the champions of Rai, Kaz and Kaori could battle it out. During this battle Raikage'll leave the stadium... and allow her champion to self-destruct (this champion will choose to die voluntarily, as opposed to the two assassins) in a massive explosion. In the midst of everything, Kaori and Kazekage will team up to look for Raikage, instructing Akina to take care of everybody else before leaving after their former friend.
At this point, the Konoha group are forced to break through the village defenses (the Chuunin Exam will be held in the centre of the village. Raikage planned it so that even if the assassination failed again, everyone would have a hard time trying to retreat. I plan on somebody saying something about how far into the village the exam is, and that they don't feel safe... but it's just a gut feeling) and return home.
This could be an opportunity for the Genin to prove they've got what it takes to be a Chuunin, perhaps.
Meanwhile, Kaori and Kaz find Raikage, at the top of a tall tower (what would be even cooler would be a "lobby scene", where Kaori and Kaz take on a handful of Chuunin and Jounin before they get to the top XD). The three engage in battle. Kaori and Kazekage hold their own against their former comrade, but every hit Raikage lands is almost twice as lethal as any attack they use. They come to a stalemate, when Raikage summons a giant storm. The elements against them, Kazekage and Kaori contemplate escape, but Raikage has the final word: she strikes Kaori through the chest with a devastating lightning bolt. Kaori falls to the ground mortally wounded (hey, we'd love for you to be immortal, but... XD), and Kazekage stops to check up on her. Satisfied with her revenge, Raikage disappears in a flash of lightning, leaving Kaz with Kaori.
At this point, a certain pre-planned character could appear (I was thinking either Maz or Nadameru...), offering to take Hokage back to Konoha. Kazekage (rather angry) refuses, but Maz/Nada offer aid.
If Nada were to help (perhaps the more likely option... although I would probably say she's out looking after the Genin), she could summon a bird with which to travel back to Konoha on.
If Maz were to help, this would be the perfect chance to show off another new thing he'd learned from his father: Summoning no Jutsu. Maz too, would summon a raven (the creature that represents the Adarakis... see Not Quite Another Day, Post 1) with which to travel back on. It wouldn't be ginormous, given that he's a Genin/Chuunin... only enough for Kazekage and Kaori to travel back on. Maz offers the raven to them, and tells them to leave: he'll make his own way back (using Kagetokeru on the underbelly of the raven, he'll travel in his own raven's shadow XD)
Then again, I'm sure Kazekage has his own way with which to get out of the village... but I think he'd be just a tad shocked at having "lost" Kaori (regardless of how much emotion training you have, I think if you lost one of the most precious things to you, you'd be devastated). XD Plus it would give pre-planned character a chance to show off their loyalty to Kaori.
I think it'd be cool, 'coz it would give some sort of closure to the Raikage story arc... but Raikage's not dead (being the plot's bad-guy of the moment)... so we can easily make another story out of it later.
