This is a thought I've had for some time, and thankfully we'll have awhile to think about this (at least, somewhat), but obviously our characters aren't always going to stay the same as they are now all the way through the fanfic. Wouldn't it make sense, then, that following major events in a character's life - say, promotion, deaths, anything that would have a big impact - a biography would need updating?
I'm not suggesting we force everyone to completely rewrite their biographies every time they get promoted. It's just a good idea to update them so we don't have Jounin running around whose biographies say "Genin" - and with written histories that stop at that level, too. As biographies are basically a reflection of the characters, it's often easiest to look up someone's bio than to go through reading every single thread just to find information on that specific character. Here are the areas which should be considered when creating an Updated Character Biography:
Updated Statistics: Age, rank, etc. Any changes in appearance should be reflected here too, though unless your character's been majorly deformed or has had more plastic surgeries than Michael Jackson, this will be a simple matter of updating hairstyle, clothing, etc.
Personality/History: This one's pretty obvious too. A quick recap of the important events in the character's life since starting the IF, how this has affected him/her - basically what would go into the history slot if the character were being newly created at that exact point. Also, I'm pretty sure that an adult isn't going to have the maturity of a 12-year-old, so it stands to reason that personality updates would be a good thing to consider.
Updated Backstory: We don't always know every detail of our characters' pasts when we create them, so a good use for creating an updated biography would be to fill in some of the blanks.
Proofreading the Original Biography: If the player doesn't like how he or she worded his/her character's biography, now would be the time to do some editing, provided he/she doesn't do anything too drastic.
Of course, it's up to the players to decide how their character has changed, and whether or not it deserves an updated biography because of it - however, I do want to make it clear that this isn't a function to be abused. Updated biographies should only be submitted when significant information - what's listed above - needs to be added to a biography. For example, you wouldn't need to update your biography every time your character completes a mission - but, if after completing several, your character undergoes enough growth/change that it needs to be recorded, that's the time to update.
Approvals
As the characters being updated have already been approved in the first place, it's silly to go through the triple approval again. Therefore, the rules considering Updated Bios are as follows:
Updated biographies are - under normal circumstances - subject a single approval by any staff member, unless a staff member feels questionably about the content of the biography. In that case, he or she may point out what exactly is so questionable, and ask for another Staff member to review it as well. Alternately, if the content is really questionable, the staff member(s) involved may also request Administrator Approval, meaning that the biography would not be accepted without the approval of the Administrator.
Once the Updated biography has approval, it is considered "IF Canon", and you're good to go.
