"Why yes, it is. Funny how that works out, isn't it?" Ryuurei grinned. THIS was one of the reasons he loved art so. He would never tire of seeing the reactions of those who viewed his works. To see her eyes trace the lines, wide with fascination...recognition...even a bit of wonder..he was proud. "Do you like it?"

Ayaka's first reaction was to merely nod emphatically, still so caught up in staring at the picture that she didn't even think to talk. No one before had ever done anything like this for Ayaka. Sure, she'd had her photograph taken with her mother - the only time in her life she'd had a picture made, and that photo was still one of her most prized possessions - but for someone to sit down and create something so amazing with their own hands? With her as the subject? And this man was a complete stranger! "It's... beautiful..." she said at last, her expression of awe shifting into a glowing smile. Maybe it wasn't so hopeless here after all.

Now they were getting somewhere. "So tell me.." He stated smoothly, shifting the sketchbook back over to his lap slowly so as not to give off an impression of jerking it away from her. The pencil went to work again in the corner of the paper, sharply scratching down the kanji of his name to 'finalize' the piece. "What is the name of the lovely young lady to whom I am dedicating this work?"

D... Dedicating!? Just what on earth was happening here? First someone was drawing a picture, and now it was being dedicated to her? What had she done to have a piece of art dedicated to her? "A-Ayaka," she stammered, still grinning somewhat even while trying to regain her dazed grasp of the situation. "Ameno Ayaka."

The pencil elicited flowing, beautiful handwriting to appear on the corner above his signature: To the lovely Ayaka-chan, a smile suits you best. "There." He nodded to himself, and gingerly removed the page from the sketchbook, holding it out to her. "A pleasure to meet you, Ayaka-chan."

"For... me?" Ayaka asked in disbelief, accepting the picture almost reverently. It was a stupid question, of course; he had just given it to her, and it even said so right there on the paper. But... really? He was really giving her such a treasure? "Th-thank you," the said softly, absolutely beaming from behind her veil of hair, even as she continued to hold the picture as though afraid if she handled it wrong, it might get damaged - or worse, disappear entirely.

"But of course, it seems only fitting, after all." Smiling as he reached into his bag to replace the pad and pencil, as well as rummaging slightly, he continued. "And you are quite welcome, Ayaka-chan. First meetings happen but once, after all. Best to have something to remember it by, no?" Grasping what he sought, an empty scroll case was removed from bag and dexterously spun around his fingers before presenting that to her as well. "There we are. Something to keep it safe in, mm?"

Ayaka nodded, thanking the kind stranger as she - carefully as she knew how - slipped the drawing into the protective enclosure of the case he had handed her. It seemed like she was doing nothing but thanking him, lately. Though something he said had caught her attention... "Do you always draw pictures of people you meet?" she asked curiously, peering up at him through a veil of hair.

"Not always, no." He replied, settling back against the bench a little more comfortably. "Just the ones who strike me as particularly interesting." "Art is a form of storytelling, after all. Each work has something to say, just as each person has a story. What's yours?"

"Not much to tell," Ayaka replied with a shrug. She shifted her gaze to stare out at something unseen, idly running her hands along the smooth curves of the case as she spoke. "The war hit my village, and a group of Konoha ninjas came to help. They said they would take some of us back here if we wanted, and so I came. I was the only one. I've been here since they started letting people into the village." Of course, there was a lot more to her story than that, but she wasn't about to just randomly spill all that to a complete stranger. Besides, surely he didn't want to hear about her troubles.

"Ahh...a war refugee, eh? I suppose that makes sense.." He nodded softly, gaze drifting about, taking in the scenery. "It's hard to find someone who was not affected by the war, in one manner or another. Terrible stuff, really." Removing the glasses from his face, a cloth was removed from his pocket as he began the clean the lenses. "I find it rather curious you were the only one to come back with the team, though. Were the casualties that severe in your village, or..." Sharp, icy eyes flicked over to her, none the duller for the lack of their corrective eyewear. "Did you have some other reason for wishing to leave?"

Ayaka almost flinched under that piercing gaze. She wasn't afraid of this person, just... a little intimidated by that look. She wasn't good at standing against confident people. Most of the time, anyways, she reminded herself upon remembering a certain incident involving a piece of wayward lumber. "I just... I didn't get along with the people there, I guess," she replied softly, hugging her knees as though drawing in on herself. "So when the people from Konoha said I could come with them, I just... left."

"I see, I see..." They were making some progress, but his companion was growing more defensive. Best to dial it back a bit. Replacing the glasses upon his nose, he nudged them back up to their proper and most comfortable position, and his warm, friendly smile returned. "There. I do believe I can see a little more clearly now.." A bird passed by overhead, his gaze lifting to follow its path. "A fresh start would be quite welcome then, I think. Though...what did your family have to say about you leaving? I assume as you are here that they were fine with it..unless.." A worried look crossed his face, placing a gentle hand upon her back. "They weren't....a casualty of the war....were they?"

Ayaka shook her head, now staring quite intently at her knees. "No, they weren't," she answered simply. "At least, I don't think they were. I left so soon, a lot of people were still scattered around hiding. But..." She sighed. It would have been too much to hope she could avoid it entirely, she supposed. Still it wasn't something she was exactly proud of. "They're... the main reason I left," she explained at last. "I guess you could say I wasn't really welcome there."

"Oh? Well, that's a bit unusual.." A slim eyebrow raised slightly. That was one hell of a time to run away from home, that was sure. "You've been nothing but a polite young lady to me, and you hardly look the type to be a troublemaker.."
