"I don't think that'll be necessary anymore," Jiro said after a moment's thought. "You seem to know more at this stage than we do, so if you say it's fine..." Yuki nodded. "We trust your judgement, Shichuumaru-kun," he agreed. Jiro paused. ".... but.... how were you gonna get us there? You said it's fast?"

Leaning against the rocky surface of the mountain, supported by a widespread palm upon it, Shichuumaru continued to grin as black lines seeped out across the rock. " Kuchiyose~!" Dust was kicked up into soft clouds as massive wings began to suddenly beat in the air. "They get around, hehe."

Yuki looked a little hesitant, but Jiro grinned wickedly. "All right!" he exclaimed gleefully, rubbing his hands together. "This is gonna be great! You seriously get around like this all the time, Shichuumaru-kun?"

"Well, I could walk...or run. But this is WAY more fun, and good practice to boot!" He grinned back just as broadly. As the over-sized insect landed, Shichuumaru directed his companions up onto its back. "Stick to the pronotum....er...the part right before the elytra...augh.. Stand THERE, and hold on to the horns for support, otherwise you'll get thrown off when his wings open up." Moving to the head, he gave a few quiet instructions to the summon before the beetle took to a low hover, the enthusiastic boy latching onto the forelimbs. "And we're ooooff~!!"

And they were off! Beside him, Yuki seemed intrigued but otherwise frozen in shock - at least he was holding on tight - while Jiro himself was holding on just tightly enough to keep from falling off while trying to look in every direction at once. His hair whipped around and got in his eyes, but that didn't really matter. And as they really got going, he couldn't help but let out a whoop of excitement: "WAHOOOOO! THIS! IS! AWESOOOME!"

It was hard to hear Jiro's exclamation over the sound of beating wings, much less the wind rushing past his ears, but Shichuumaru smiled proudly all the same. As the trio neared the large tree from a few days ago, he began to scan the area, looking for any sign of anyone or anything useful, dropping to the ground once they were close enough, and waiting for the others to join him before dismissing the summon.

Yuki forced himself to breathe as he and Jiro got down from the back of the giant beetle. It had been an exhilarating experience, to say the least, and he had enjoyed the view. But all the same, he was quite content to have booth feet back on solid ground again. He was left a little dizzy and windblown from the event, but not nearly so much as Jiro, whose hair now resembled a haystack and whose garments were blown almost inside out. Yuki - who kept his longish hair pulled back after the fashion of his clan - had but to straighten his haori. Just how on earth had Jiro gotten that tumbled of an appearance? "That was the most amazing thing in my life!" Jiro was raving to Shichuumaru-kun. "That's seriously how you get around all the time!? Man, I've gotta learn to summon! Think we can do that again sometime?"

"Well, for times when you need to cover a lot of distance fast, it's definitely the best way to go for my Clan." Grinning from ear to ear, he continued. "And sure! Maybe we'll hit the lake with some water beetles sometime, that's a good experience too!" "But for now, we gotta focus. We're where we're supposed to be...I think...but...where's our mysterious host?"

Yuki looked around, smoothing out his bangs as Jiro raked fingers through his blondish hair, somehow making the problem better and worse at the same time. Even shaking his head did little good. Watching his teammate out of the corner of his eye, Yuki couldn't help but be glad he hadn't been born a Tensei just so he didn't have to deal with that crazy hair of theirs. "It'd be good to have a Hyuuga around right now," Yuki muttered as he continued looking. "I don't like not knowing who's out there waiting for us."

The stage is set. Dim the lights, raise the curtain.
The sun vanished. That is not to say that the heavenly orb was no longer in the sky, merely that a large black mass had appeared in front of it, blotting out its illuminating rays. The world (or at least the immediate area surrounding the trio) was plunged into the darkest depths, a murky haze rolling in on chill breeze.
And...Action!
From the shade-soaked earth a hand arose, nearly indiscernible from the shadow swirling about them. Followed shortly by a mate. Two more pairs preceded two bodies as the first pair had, until three wavering forms of purest, deepest black stood behind each of the boys, their smooth figures flawlessly unmarred save for uncaring, unfeeling eyes of pearl-white.
Without a sound, the Shades lunged.

Yuki tensed when the world went dark. Maybe they should have stayed in henge after all.... "What the heck is that!?" Jiro demanded, pointing up where the sun had been. Upon looking, there seemed to be some sort of inky blob blocking its light. .... inky...? Could it be...? "Looks like it could be some sort of ---" Movement. "MOVE!" Yuki shouted. He followed his own command by jumping forward into a roll. Yuki, barely visible out of the corner of his eye, was a blur of movement as he jumped up into the branches of the tree. As soon as he came up out of the roll, Yuki whipped around, hands already forming a basic seal as he caught sight of a black figure - with frighteningly lifeless, uncaring eyes - lunging for him. Yuki had recovered just in time. "Kekkai!*" he commanded, releasing his chakra into the jutsu. It was the most basic of barrier jutsu, the first a young Sekimori learned: a square or rectangular cube encasing the target area. It would keep things of a physical nature - solids, liquids, and so on - from getting out or in. It wasn't flawless, of course, but its simplicity was its greatest strength. Because it cost so little to cast, strengthening it with more chakra - or maintaining it as is - was easy. The shadow creature contained, for now, Yuki looked about to see how his friends were faring. Kekkai - Barrier. Plain and simple. As Yuki's narration explains, it is the first and simplest barrier jutsu taught to members of the Sekimori clan. Its most basic shape is a cube, which can be expanded into a more rectangular shape if needed, and can also be cast as a sphere with enough practice. There are stronger, and more specialized, shields are part of the Sekimori clan's arsenal, but because of its simple and broad-purposed nature, it is one of the most commonly used.

" BUU!" The larva's voice was in his ear at almost the exact same time as Yuki's exclamation. Diving forward, the athletic Kyousei boy tucked into a roll to dodge the first lunge, flipped forward again to gain more space, and pivoted in midair to land facing the.. ..faceless assailant. "Okay, now THAT'S creepy! The heck are these things?" Watching as Yuki made some sort of...box...around the one that had gone after him, he only avoided another swipe thanks to a quick backstep urged by his partner. "Whoah! Right, focus!" "I think these...things...wanna rumble! And me...I'm of a mind to give 'em what they want!" Grinning, Shichuumaru quickly launched into a technique of his own. Hopefully Jiro was alright, and Yuki seemed to have his under control at the moment. Flipping back again, rocks erupted from the ground as his hands connected, and by the time he regained his footing, his clenched fists were encased in stone. " Doton: Tebukuro! Let's see how tough you are!" Switching from defensive dodging to a forward rush, he brought a fist straight towards the creature's head. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And now, for the second act..Hands rose once more from the dirt, dragging inky bodies up behind them. Above Sekimori Yuki, a shape began to form out of the trunk of the tree, just above and behind him, arms outstretched and ready to grab. The creature he had contained began to recklessly beat its fists against the side of the barrier. Soon the shades had a clear advantage of numbers, while their strength remained yet unknown. Not quite a cast of thousands...but let us see how you perform..

No sooner had Yuki walled off one of the shadow things than several more appeared out of the ground, and Yuki felt something gripping his shoulder. He turned just in time to see an inky hand latching onto him before the entire creature was slashed into melting, dripping shreds by Jiro's wakizashi. Yuki wasted no time Flashing away, to what should hopefully be outside of the odd shadowed area, or at least at the very edge of it. From there he'd be able to pick off the shadow creatures without being in the thick of things; with the only offensive technique he knew costing too much chakra - and therefore being too risky - to use right now, he would play the support role by walling off as many shadow creatures as he could for Jiro and Shichuumaru-kun to pick off at their leisure. Tensei Jiro eyed the black liquid on the blade of his wakizashi; it looked like.... ink, maybe? Or paint? "... heh. Looks like we're up now," he observed with a delightedly wicked grin. "Yo Shichuumaru-kun! These guys look like they wanna dance, don't they? Let's see if they'll keep up. "Tensei-Ryu: Sekigahara no Odori!*"It was a difficult technique, one he had just learned not that long ago, but it was the best thing he could think of to dispatch this many opponents as quickly as possible. And if these things had eyes, it was obvious they could see. Or else, whoever was controlling them did. Jiro would use that to his advantage. As the jutsu activated, Jiro sprang forward, slipping into the graceful, deadly dance that was Tensei physical combat. As he did so, chakra swirled around him, creating fore- and afterimages of himself, often moving in exaggeratedly slow or fast ways. Here one took ages to dramatically slice towards a shadow creature - not that the attack would do anything if it hit, of course - as there, another dashed forward with near inhuman speed. Jiro himself used Shunshin and a self-enveloping genjutsu to make himself blend in with the fake images, hopping back and forth between them to enhance the illusion. It wasn't perfect, of course. The true thing - Sekigahara no Mai - was seamless, appearing as though all of those dramatic images were actually doing the fighting. At the same time, a secondary genjutsu would be lulling the targets into a state of confusion, heightening their belief that the illusion was real and at the same time hindering their defensive capabilities. Jiro wouldn't learn that until he was a Jounin, if then. Some never moved past practicing Odoridou. But Sekigahara no Odori was good enough for his purposes now: move quickly between enemies, strike quicker, and confuse them enough that they'd have a harder time touching him. Between that, Shichuumaru-kun fighting, and Yuki walling them off however he could, this version of the technique was just fine. And Jiro was having the time of his life using it. *Tensei-Ryu: Sekigahara no Odori - Tensei-style: Dance of Decisive Battle. As Jiro explains in his mental ramblings, this form is designed to confuse multiple opponents and defeat them quickly, before they have a chance to use their superior numbers to an advantage. The user combines quick, dancelike physical combat with genjutsu to make it appear as though before- and after-images of the user are attacking just as much as the real one, and also to make it very difficult to tell which is the real one. The final form of this technique also utilizes a secondary confusion genjutsu, but Jiro isn't that advanced yet. For the difference between Odoridou - what Jiro is using - and Maidou, see the Tensei clan information thread.

Well now THAT was flashy. Watching Jiro move as the remains of the shade dripped from his earthen fists, Shichuumaru smirked. "I had a feeling they'd enjoy a good beat, Jiro-kun!" Still. Yuki with his weird box-things...Jiro doing...whatever the heck that was... And here I am playing with dirt..Gritting his teeth, he raised his fists towards an oncoming wave of the strange attackers. "We didn't take a year off to play kiddy games... Launch!" Exploding chakra just behind the rock encasing his hands, the self-made 'gloves' rocketed forward, barreling through several of the things, leaving gaping holes in their chest. Digging his heels into the ground below, he began a complex series of seals, a faint green-white glow cloaking his skin as he dug into vest pockets, withdrawing seeds. " Bu..." Came a soft whine from the carrying shell on his back. "I know what I'm doing, chill! Zyurinton: Tsurukusa no Kei*!" The green-white energy coalesced about his fists, the seeds within erupting into growth, roots writhing back, wrapping around his hands and along to his forearms, green shoots poking from between clenched fingers. Outward they grew, longer and thicker, winding into long tendrils as wicked hooked thorns sprouted along the sides. "Nnngh.." Sweat beading on his forehead, Shichuumaru cut the flow to the seeds before they became too demanding, and flicked a wrist. The supple vine lashed out with a sharp Crack!, and the boy's grin was restored. Golden-yellow eyes gleaming, he rushed headlong into the fray again, a veritable whirlwind of green and thorns. *Forest Element: Whip of Vines- As vines are incredibly versatile plantmatter, there are several in the Zyurinton-capable Kyousei arsenal. As for the effect, I think it was pretty well explained. As can probably be noted as well, it's slightly above Shichuumaru's current skill level, hence the strain.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Smirking slightly, amused eyes continued to observe the events as they unfolded. Interesting....Blinking as he shrugged off the faint effects of the Genjutsu trying to affect him, he went back to work. Just a bit more pressure, I believe. That should be sufficient. He did feel a little bit bad for Sekimori-kun, as attempting to leave the shadowy area would be rather like running into a wall at this point, but the boy would persevere, no doubt. Sharp eyes flitting back and forth, more of the inky creatures began to arise.

Yuki shook his head, trying once again to rid himself of the headache that had taken over him as soon as he ran into the edge of the shadowed area. It seemed some kind of barrier was holding them in, but something this large and incorporeal was far beyond his current training to penetrate. That, and trying to do anything to it would take his attention off his friends, who were currently trying to fight off the remaining shadow creatures. The ground was wet with their fallen ilk; watching the other two boys fight was like watching a battle unfold in a deep, all-encompassing puddle. Yuki himself, having had it proven ineffectual to try and escape the shadowy barrier surrounding the tree, had taken a different approach. He had cast one of his generic barriers so that it would rise up from the ground - directly under his feet, to be exact - and lift him up out of the mayhem. Up here, he would have a better vantage, and more importantly, he didn't think the ink people would be able to spawn out of a clear barrier. At least, he hoped they wouldn't. But even if they could, at least he was out of the thick of things. Jiro, what on earth are you doing? he moaned inwardly as soon as he realized what his friend was doing. It was an effort to wrench his eyes back to the task at hand and continue his work of isolating the creatures from his friends, but soon it wouldn't matter anyway. The battlefield was littered with more barriers than Yuki had ever tried to maintain at one time - at least, with things inside trying to get out - and he was nearing the end of his capabilities. Soon it would be all he could do just to hold on to the ones he'd already captured. And the others weren't looking so hot, either. This... wasn't working out like Jiro had planned. He had hoped that hitting the ink creatures hard and fast would prevent more from spawning, or at least take care of enough that he and Shichuumaru-kun could pick off the new ones more easily. But they just kept coming, faster and faster. It was time to switch tactics. With a snap of his fingers - and a chunk of the last remains of his chakra - a second wakizashi snapped into his other hand in a puff of smoke. The fore- and afterimages faded away as Jiro allowed them to dissipate, while he himself settled into a different stance from the one he'd used earlier. "Hawatari no Odori!*"Using this technique was always a gamble - particularly with little chakra left - but it was a necessity dictated by the failure of the first. His remaining chakra was funneled back into his own body, renewing his sense of balance and masking the leaden protests of fatigued muscles as he leapt back into the fray, whirling and slashing with both blades. Every so often his Dance allowed him to catch sight of Shichuumaru-kun, who had grown vines from his hands and was lashing out at the inky people. So it was true what they were saying; the Kyousei clan had control of plants. More inky people melted to the ground in a puddle of liquid as the two boys fought around Yuki's shields - they were coming more slowly, now; a bad sign - when it hit Jiro like a smack in the head. Plants. Liquid. .... That's it!"Yo Shichuumaru-kun!" he said when he allowed himself to get close enough, his voice somewhat strained from the exertion. "These things are just liquid, right? Ink or paint or something. Think those plants of yours can just suck them up, like roots do with water?" *Hawatari no Odori - Dance of Hawatari. Hawatari is a word meaning "walking on the edge of a sword," so it's easy to imagine what the purpose of this form is. With a couple rare exceptions, this Dance is almost exclusively performed with two weapons, and utilizes dancelike movements to balance offensive capabilities with defense and conversion of energy. Because of this, neither offense nor defense are particularly strong when compared to some of the other forms that focus on one more heavily than the other. Like Sekigahara no Odori/Mai, the defense in this form focuses on evasion more than blocking, though Hawatari - unlike Sekigahara - does allow for it when necessary. Jiro's usage of chakra to keep his body going is not a necessary part of the Dance, but rather a supplementary technique used when one is fatigued, but has to keep going. Hawatari no Odori is risky to use because of the delicate balance (in more than one sense of the word) the user has to maintain - hence the name - but when used appropriately, it can pay off.
