Hello Everyone Ive been reading these boards for a while now just never bothered to log in but I finally got around to it. I have one question about the Naruto series. Why is the song Wind at the end of the first series in English? Did they do it that way so japanese kids can learn english or does the majority of the japanese community know english already? I'm curious BTW I cosplay as Kiba

Hi, and welcome to the boards! ^^ In answer to your question, you'd probably have to ask Akeboshi if you want a definite answer, but I think I can help anyways. It's considered the "hip" thing in Japan to use English (or Engish, as it usually is) in just about everything. Songs have random English words and/or phrases for no apparent reason, and English text is all over signs, clothing, and packaging. So maybe Akeboshi thought it'd be cool to have a song done entirely in English. As for Japanese speaking English, Japanese graduate High School with an extensive English vocabulary and a pretty good knowledge of grammar and such, it's just using it that tends to be the problem (hence the pronunciations of some words, and lines like "my knee is still shaking like I was twelve). Or perhaps the people who pick the Naruto theme songs wanted one in English for whatever reason - maybe they knew that the series already had an obsessive following outside Japan? Well, that's my two cents. ^^

Thats all very intresting its ashame that the United States doesnt feel the same way as the Japanese about using another cultures language as "hip"
Does anyone on these boards live in Japan? Im asking this question because I would think you would need to know Japanese and English just to read and watch television and communicate with people.

Yeah. I'm inclined to agree here. Its cool to use English in Japan. Just go and visit. I mean...its starting to head the other way too...in the US (and here)...that using Japanese is kinda cool (amongst anime lovers XD).

yeah, I have two Japanese exchange students in my school and I just got around to meeting them today actually! I was asking them what was cool over in Japan and they both said anything that's American/English. It's the latest trend down there! OMG we're cool somewhere!!

You know the thing that I like about japanese though...which is why I think that it is catchy...is the titles. We don't have the same things...sama, sensei, senpai, kun, chan. Etc...thats what 'I' love about it anyway.

So thats what makes it successful in English, I just think that its cool for Japanese to speak english because its one of the most universal languages today...well...largest used anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the words coming out of my mouth...I'd much rather have a more...logical language.

I hear this thread calling out to me... ...herg. XD Yes, English is cool over there. More to the point, anything that's FOREIGN is cool over there... but to them, English is probably the most common thing to be cool. To a slightly greater degree, anything from America rates really highly (unless you're a console... *POKE POKE X-BOX YOU SUCK*)... perhaps for the reason that you're either hip, or just really funny. That's why baseball is more popular than sumo, or Engrish is everywhere. When I went to Japan, I was a hit. Me, one of the scariest, most unapproachable looking people ever, was teh h0tn3ss! Lol. 'Tis true! If they know you're a foreigner, they try and make you feel very welcome (as well as laugh behind your back. Try going to Tokyo Disneyland. LOL). If you're lucky enough to, say, go on a student exchange to a high school or something, they make you feel VERY welcome. Instant popularity. It's really great.

Hehehehe. Sounds like fun. But...not really talkin' about the languages. Ah well ^_^. What I find funny also, is in EVERY start up theme to an anime, in Japanese, they have ONE phrase in English...could even be a word...
