First and foremost, I have to mention the one series that started it all for me: The Lord of the Rings (BEFORE everyone and their cousin had seen the movies, mind; this was before there *were* movies). From there I moved on to Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time (amazing fantasy series I recommend to all readers, but don't bother if you prefer a monolinear plotline) and am currently reading through the series for the umpteenth time. I've also made a pretty good dent in the Dragonlance saga and have read all the Harry Potter books as well as those of the Eragon series that have been published (though the last two are decidedly light reading when compared to Jordan's work). As for things that aren't fantasy that I feel like sharing with you all.... here's a short list: ~ Code of the Woosters by P.G. Wodehouse (I've only been able to begin it, sadly), because British wit is the second-best wit there is (Irish being the first ^_~) ~ J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century by Tom Shippey, because Tolkien is just that awesome ~ A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. If you've read it, you know why everyone has to. ~Various selections from Norton's Anthologies of Literature (if you ever feel like taking a mental trip without the risk of illegal drugs, try reading Tristan Tzara's Proclamation Without Pretension - nothing like something from the Dadaist movement to get that surreal feeling going strong). Also, I enjoy various poetry by Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and Alexander Pope. Yeah, I'm a book nerd. XD

Ah, I love books very much. One of my best friends growing up.
I have to feverantly agree with Kaori's choices of Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, and Dragonlance. All of which are phenomenal series (It is sad though that Jordan died before finishing up the last book! Maybe one of his sons or someone will finish the series, hopefully it won't turn out bad like some ones we know *cough* Children of Hurin *cough*) Oh, and I definitely agree with the monolinear part for The Wheel of Time. Sheesh, that has more story lines then swiss cheese has holes.
Both Eragon and Twilight series aren't bad, but I can't say I've ever been a Harry Potter fan.
One of my favorite fiction book/series occured in the Forgotten Realms lineage of books. The Drizzt chronicles, while not the best written in the world, has awesome characters and wonderfully populated and imaginative world. I highly suggest it.
Other Fantasy/Sci-fi books- The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss Any of the Xanth novels by Piers Anthony Enders Game by Orson Scott Card And Wicked by Gregory Maguire. All of which are great books.
Of a more realistic taste- Kite Runner and Middlesex Are two other great novels.
(:

Actually, they are finishing the Wheel of Time series. Though Jordan himself passed away before he could finish the entire thing, he left enough material in various forms (notes, recordings, info he'd shared with his family, and parts of the book he had already written) that his family decided to honor his desire to complete the book. It's being finished by Brandon Sanderson and is slated for publication in late 2009. Personally, I can't wait! Sure, it won't be the same as if Jordan himself had penned all the words, but Jordan has done far too much for anyone to simply allow his final work to lay unfinished.
I'm a big fan of the Wicked musical, but I've heard some things about that book that pretty much ruined my desire to read it. ^^;
