*wonders what in the world took so long for someone to start this thread*
I love this game... it's just... awesomeness on a disk.
Picture a DDR style game (matching on screen to physical input) but with a guitar shaped and styled control, where you hold buttons down on the fret and "strum" the switch where the strings would be on a real guitar. This is a favorite in our house here at campus, and we have spent many a night staying up waaay too late merely to play this.
I mean, the controller even has a whammy bar! Where could it go wrong! My only hope is that they release standalone song disks (at reduced cost) at some point later, because while a great selection of songs is included (including Iron Man, Cochise, Bark at the Moon, Cowboys from Hell, Fat Lip, I Love Rock and Roll, I Wanna Be Sedated, Sharp Dressed Man, Smoke on the Water, Ziggy Stardust, You Got Another Thing Comin, Take Me Out, Symphony of Destruction, Sharp Dressed Man *winks at K-sama's siggy*, and... the best air guitar song of all time, so of course it was included here... Smoke on the Water), eventually they will get old, as all things do. On top of the major songs, for all you indie rock fans, there's 17 unlockable tracks from indie bands, which are also pretty rockin. I definitely suggest that every PS2 owning geetar nut get it ASAP (unless you rely on PAL versions in which case you have to wait *sticks tongue out at Maz*)... Oh, and you don't have to know how to play guitar one single bit to be able to play the game. Within 30 minutes of playing, I was getting great scores, and kicking my girlfriend's butt. (She DOES play guitar, unlike me)

Ooo, I'm glad to hear this is such an awesome game, because I've had my eye on it for sometime. Now it's definitely on my must-play list! ^_^

I hate you Ten-kun. Lol.
The second this thing comes out in New Zealand.... I'm going to save up for it! XD Amongst other things. I'm watching this game like a hawk, I swear. Seen numerous gameplay vids and trailers in anticipation. Lookin' good, and lookin'fun. Uber fun.

Its fun for the first like four hours. Its really easy to get good at, then once you play every song like six times... yeah. But its REALLY fun at first. ^_^

Well, it's a bit like Amplitude in that respect. I've mastered all the songs in that game on the hardest difficulty level... but it's always fun to go back and make up some beats. XD

Guitar Hero is one of my favorite games.
I've put 20+ hours into that game easily and I still love playing it.
They only thing they should have done differently was include a mode to change up the sequence to the song to make it more interesting and challenging to play over and over again.
Maybe they'll do it for a Guitar Hero 2? maybe?

Maybe we should make a program for Guitar Hero like they did with Stepmania for DDR and ITG. Then we could put any extra stuff we wanted onto it.

I suppose an update to this thread is needed, also.
First... this game is due out in New Zealand in May/June sometime! YAHOO!!! AT LONG LAST. After asking the Gamesman retailers at Armageddon, I managed to fanboy this information out of them. XD
What saddens me, however... is the recent announcement of Guitar Hero 2 at E3. I am glad to hear it. There's a new co-operative mode, where one can select from lead, rhythm or bass guitars... and a few extra features (which I can't really comment about since I haven't played either of them XD). Awesome news, however, for those of you in the States. Up to 55 songs, I believe.... and not to mention, VAN HALEN!!!! XDXDXD

This game really makes me cry. It's been delayed yet again for us PALers.... and to make it worse, the price has been boosted: now it's going to cost NZ$180. AIEEEEEE. I could buy a GAMECUBE for far less than that, would you believe! XD

Update: Kinda...Maz played on this at the Gamesman (Computer/gaming shop) today. Looked kinda like fun actually. Quite a lot like Amplitude/Frequency and Beat mania and stuff. Kinda cool, but for the musically inept like myself, its not the type of game I play...I'll stick to my RPGs and platformers XD. Anyways, await the update from Maz too...theres bound to be one VERY shortly.

Right you are my friend. XD
I've finally got my greasy Microsoft shinobi mits on this game, and I must say, as a guitar enthusiast, it rocks bigtime.
Of course, the big problem I have with this game is that because I actually play guitar, I was able to skip to the Hard difficulty level before I found myself even remotely challenged. So I've missed out 50% of the game. (granted, some of the songs I hadn't heard before... I knew I was in for a bit of a ride when I picked Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughn... and it was those songs that I more or less had a little trouble with) But it's still a great game. I've completed Career on Hard, so I guess it's onto Expert next.
My favourite song to play is I Wanna Be Sedated by the Ramones on Expert (or, really, as made FAMOUS by the Ramones XD). So much fun. This game rawkz, hardcore. Even Dad seems to show a minor interest in it; he was watching me play for several songs. XD I swear, if he plays... he'll probably pwn me. lol
But yes. Definitely a great buy. Sad thing is, of course, because it uses a guitar controller, I can imagine it would put some first-timers off playing it (those who aren't musically skilled may be a little apprehensive XD)... but my advice is to give it a go. The easy difficulty's really easy (like, two notes easy), and you never know... you might find it fun. XD
The only thing I can hope for with the next game (or possibly the game after) is Metallica, Joe Satriani, and Dream Theater. XD
