Yup, just another question from me. ^^ How long has everyone ( or anyone) who does fanart, been doing it? I mean, how long did it take you to have your artwork even resemble the same characters. I've tried a few myself, they come out decent, but not as pretty as I would like. Is it just the same as I hear everywhere? Practice makes perfect? Any tips then? Or perhaps a site...I know super lazy one I am...but I'm not asking for step by step instructions, just tips..then maybe once I get a scanner (someday...) I can put some stuff up

I've technically been drawing since I could hold a crayon, but I've been drawing seriously for about 4 years now. What I do is copy pics: Pokemon's Team Rocket are my favorites to do this with, because the style is relatively simple, and they have cool poses.
Basically what I do is I stick a Pokemon tape into the VCR, watch for any good poses, then hit the Pause button. Then, with my paper and pencil (and a good drawing surface) I carefully, sketchy line by sketchy line, scratch out a decent copy of what I see on the screen. (Look up at the screen CONSTANTLY, or you won't have a good copy) While doing this, notice how things are drawn, and why you think it might be drawn that way. When you're done, clean up the sketch and shade it (still abusing the TV screen reference), and voila! Instant study pic. ;D
Basically what this does is teaches instant technique.... my shading skills increased by 100% after doing this, and my overall drawing by at least 95%, and I only drew four pics like that total. If you pay attention to what you see when you read manga and watch anime, and apply that to your own style, it's a good way of improvement. Also, for poses, look at pics of ppl doing those same poses for an anatomy reference. I do it with my own hands all the time.
Hope that helps! ;D

Tips: First off you wanna copy some pictures you have seen, pause an anime you love and just draw a character. Then....DOODLE A LOT!! Whenever you're bored just draw and it's a surefire way to improve your drawing skills. I mean, I'm not the best right now, but I look back at my old 8th grade drawings and they were ever-so sucky. And the ones I have right now are even better so just keep on pushin the pencil/copying. You can trace, but it doesn't help you as much. It'll probably help you maintain a steady hand though, tracing's fun but I don't show that work off ^.^' Pretty soon you can change the position of a character by just seeing him on screen and then you'll be able to make an incrediably well done original character or a fanart without looking at a pic~

Yeah, copying and random doodling are great ways to improve. Also, look at how other people draw certain things, and compare it to how you do it. See if you can learn stuff from other people.

I've been drawing fanart since I was 13...So 3 years.... Go and find pics of your favorite anime/manga charas, and copy the picture. The way I learn to draw characters, is to try and draw them from memory after I've copied some pics of them, and then compare the work to a pic of the character and then change the drawing up until it looks perfect. But basically, yes, practice makes perfect, in a way... If you draw the same character a lot, drawing them comes easily! ^_^

Hmm. It seems there's not a lot to be said here that hasn't already been said. However, I'll try to think of a few more tips.
I've been drawing for about five and a half years now. I think one of the fastest ways you can improve is to expiriment. Yes, practice is good. For example, if you draw the same character a lot, they start looking a lot more refined. However, it's important to try new things to hone your skills. Try a pose you don't think you can do. Look for references.
The most important thing though is to observe life. If you're walking around or riding in the car... doing anything, really, take a look around. If you need help drawing hands, look at your own. Look at how your hand moves, how your thumb and fingers bend and connect and react to movement, etc.
Going on the fan art idea, do the same with the anime. Look at a lot of pictures. Examine the style. Fan art is hard for me because after all these years I've developed my own personal style and it's hard to change it. Look at screenshots. Look at the shape of the eyes, the way the lines flow, etc. If there's something that's particularly hard (for me, it's Naruto's hair... I like to make it too fluffy), find a screenshot that you can copy from. Eventually after drawing the characters enough, they'll start looking better.
Like anything, though, it's not going to be perfect the first time. ^^ Just remember that and you should be okay. DON'T BE LIKE SASUKE! Don't compare yourself to others and take the time to see how your own skills have improved.
That's the only advice I have. ^_^;
