February 13th. There was a knock on Sorien's door.
He answered to find a confused Mazrakiel standing on his doorstep. "Hey man, what's up?"
"You mind if I come in?"
"Sure thing."
Once inside, they got the small talk out of the way: how they were, what was going on, what they had planned for the day... until finally, Sorien asked "So, what brings you here, Maz?"
Maz shrugged and took a deep breath, before the tone in his voice dropped to something a little more than solemn. "I was thinking of... I dunno, getting something for Dayna for Valentine's Day. What do you think, man?"
Sorien looked a little confused, but he did think that Maz would feel like this; he'd noticed those two becoming friends. The way they talked to each other, how often they talked to each other. It was obvious they enjoyed the company of each other. So he wasn't surprised that Maz was here at all.
"I mean, I'm not... you know, I don't think I love her... but... like. I wanna, get her something, 'coz... she's cool... she seems like, she'd accept it. Like, she wouldn't... turn me away or anything. She seems to be really nice, you know, she like, talks to me and... "
He continued to confide his thoughts in Sorien. He didn't want to stop talking. He wanted to say everything: all the reasons that brought Maz to Sorien's door that day. "I guess.... she's... probably the closest thing I've had to a girlfriend before. I've never... been cool enough to do things like this with other girls. I've never, had many friends who were girls. They just don't..."
The trail of thought paused for a moment -- Maz got lost among his emotions -- and picked up somewhere else. "...Dayna's, nice, you know? And, I don't know if I should take it as something... more than friends. I probably shouldn't anyway, but... you know, she just... gives me comfort, y'know? She's a nice girl... maybe that's all she is. But... I like her being around. I like her being in our team, you know?"
Sorien nodded.
"I like hangin' with her... and... you know, I guess I kinda want her to enjoy hanging out with me too. Maybe... I guess I should... I mean, I wanna... I dunno. I dunno what to get. If I should get anything."
"Just..."
Maz had to pause again -- amidst all the thinking, he'd gotten lost. He didn't know what he wanted to say to her... well, he knew, he just didn't know what to do about it. He didn't know... what she'd say.
"d**n, man. Maybe I... dunno. I'm confused."
Sorien smiled. He knew all along how Maz had felt; the second Maz began to stumble over his words... before that, even: when he mentioned her name... he knew exactly what Maz was thinking. He thought long and hard about it -- about Maz, about Dayna, about what this could mean for the team, and whether it would compromise the security of the team -- before finally speaking. "Well, man, here's what I think you should do..."
February 14th. There was a knock on Dayna's door.
She answered to find Mazrakiel on her doorstep; the smile on his face hid the nervousness in his heart. "Hey Maz, what's up?"
"You mind if I come in?"
"Sure thing."
Once inside, they got the small talk out of the way: how they were, what was going on, what they had planned for the day... until finally, Dayna asked "So, what brings you here, Maz?"
The moment of truth had finally arrived. Mazrakiel took a deep breath, before the tone in his voice turned a little more than anxious. "Well, I uh... have something for you. A gift for... Valentine's Day."
'A gift? For me?' she thought to herself.
Maz reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small gold ring; it was plain, with no engravings or markings on it at all, nothing to spoil its perfect surface. He opened his hand and held it out to her.
"Wow, that's... amazing." She looked at the ring in wonderment, unsure of what to do. She didn't expect that.
"It's not much, but... happy Valentine's Day."
Dayna happily took the gift from Maz. She held it up and admired it closely, before placing it on her finger and remembering...
"...oh, that reminds me! I have something for you too!"
February 13th. Dayna was out amongst the streets of Konoha. No mission today, just some time off for a while.
Her father had asked her to go get the groceries today; they had a big party planned the next night, in honor of Valentine's Day, so Dayna decided to go to the stores and help out with buying supplies for the big do. While out shopping, she passed by a small shop selling jewellery. She smiled, and thought about gifts for people the next day. Or at least, one person in particular. She wasn't sure if he'd like it... but she enjoyed him being around. She wanted to get him something, to show her appreciation... who knows? Maybe he would actually like it. He looked like he... wouldn't turn her away. He seemed to enjoy her company too. They were good friends. And she wanted him to...
She turned around and ran out of sight -- off to her room -- before coming back with something in her hands; a small metal chain necklace. It was small and simple, much like Maz's gift, but it was the thought that counted. She felt kinda nervous, before finally opening her hands to show Mazrakiel the gift she'd purchased for him -- his eyes lit up as the necklace glittered in her hands.
"It's a necklace. Can I... put this on you?"
Maz smiled; a smile which hid a great excitement inside. "Sure," he calmly spoke, though whether or not he was able to contain his joy is a different story.
She moved closer to him and reached forward around his neck, placing the chain around him. She leaned back and stared at the chain that now dangled around his neck, before looking up and gazed into his eyes -- he was smiling at her, happily.
Maz suddenly felt himself go weak. His arms almost felt like dropping and dangling next to his side, his knees almost bent and gave way underneath him. He stared into her eyes. Before that moment, he never understood what people were on about when they talked about a girl's eyes being fascinating. He thought, 'They're just eyes. We all have them.' But staring into Dayna's... he finally knew what it all meant. There was this feeling of being so close to someone that drew him even closer, a warmth he felt by gazing into her; he was being pulled in.
"I wanna..."
Words escaped from his mouth; he shut it again before he could continue the sentence. He felt his face go completely red; he cursed at himself inside. He didn't mean to say anything. Dayna looked at him, curiously -- this made him feel even more embarrassed. But looking into her eyes, he wanted to be honest with her, to be closer to her. He felt like he wanted to.. to....
"...kiss you..."
He suddenly felt like he wanted to hide. Almost like he wanted to take back what he said. He was afraid, all of a sudden; he felt more vulnerable than ever before. The thought she might say no seemed very real to him...
...until she smiled. It was a weird smile; a smile that said she wanted to, and found it strange that he wanted to feel the same. She nodded, and let out a quiet, a soft "Yeah..." before moving closer to him. She slightly turned her head sideways, closed her eyes, and kissed him warmly on the lips.
They kissed for a long time. He kissed her tenderly, so as not to hurt her... but hard, so to make her feel loved. His arms moved to her waist, and he held her softly, so as not to squash her... but tightly, so to make her feel close. He suddenly felt warm -- all the fear he'd felt seconds ago had completely disappeared, replaced with the most gentle, calming warmth ever: love.
Yeah, maybe he was wrong the day before. He did love her. He knew it now.
After a long time, she finally pulled away from a kiss he enjoyed -- a wide grin on her face; it would seem she enjoyed it too. This was a moment they'd never forget. Maz smiled down at her; Dayna smiled back. She placed her arms around his, and held him tightly.
Her arms felt warm. In Dayna's arms, his whole body felt so warm, like it was glowing. She made him feel so happy... being with her gave him a peace he'd never felt before. He held her body close to his, he didn't wanna let go.
"I love you, Dayna."
Dayna rested her head on Maz's shoulder, smiling. She felt warmer now, too. Like this was where she always wanted to be. She felt... safe; she heard a deep honesty in his voice, that said he'd never leave just from the way he said it. Though she hadn't been looking for love, she found comfort in his arms. She held him tighter, and began to think to herself that maybe... just maybe..
"...I... love you too."
He answered to find a confused Mazrakiel standing on his doorstep. "Hey man, what's up?"

"Sure thing."
