Tenrai glanced back, over her shoulder. She estimated that she was far enough away from the nearest building for none to be damaged, no matter what direction the jutsu could erupt. She took a deep breath and focused. It was now or never. The technique needed to be tested, though the work she had done on it showed that it should work.
A small jolt of chakra spread wide both fans, and she spread them, and her arms, wide. Tense, psyching herself up to the task, she made sure she had the sequence right in her mind. Then, fans spread wide, she slowly twisted them so that her hands were near enough to form the seals. Forcing herself to breath evenly, she began the sequence, whispering as she carefully formed each. No point risking a mistake.
"Bird, Boar, Horse, Bird,Dragon, Monkey, Boar, Bird, Rat, Ram, Dog, Dragon, Snake, Bird..." Her lips opened and closed around each word, then prepared for the final. She rotated her arms, bringing the twin fans inwards, and formed the last seal, Ox, just as the gusts formed collided.
Tenrai felt the chakra erupt outwards, sending the wind slightly downwards in a blazing flurry of disrupted sand. The wind roared in her ears, but the chakra toll was already driving her down. It turned out that it was a good thing; the jutsu contacted the ground just moments after she did and tore it apart. The explosion rained sand over her inert form, and the noise alerted those nearby.
Some days later, Tenrai woke to a dark room. The sharp, clean scent of a hospital was overpowering, and as she tried to sit up, her body refused. She didn't hurt, per say, but she could feel the exhaustion. Thinking back, she grimaced. She remembered that her jutsu had worked the way she had planned - but it clearly took too much chakra. She knew she wouldn't be using it for a long time to come unless she worked it down to a lower level, one that would have such a price.
