((OoC: as we dont' have much of a reference as to Sand's customs, I based Kazekage's office, clothing, etc, on what we see during the flashback with Kazekage in the Naruto series - I forget which episode it is, though, or I'd say. The rest, like the markings on the scroll, I just made up.))
All was quiet in Hidden Sand Village. Most of the village had settled down for its midday nap - more to escape the heat than anything else - so the only people who were awake were those who needed to be. Hitomebore Kiyoshi was one of them.
The Kazekage of the Sand, one of the youngest in generations, was awake - if only just so. A warm breeze flowed in from an open window, and the only sounds from outside were of birds and the occasional door slamming, lulling him into a dreamlike state of half-sleep. It was nice, even if he did prefer actually laying down for real sleep or just staying fully awake in the first place.
Frantic footsteps rushing down the open corridors startled him out of his semi-dozing. Who in the world could that be? he thought, yawning from behind the white cloth that masked his face from below his eyes. The traditional garb of the Kazekage was anything but comfortable in the heat of the Sand village, which had added to his tiredness. I wish Kaori had taught me that self-cooling jutu while she had the chance.
"Kazekage-sama! Kazekage-sama!" a voice called, presumably the owner of the equally frantic footsteps. A moment later, a young boy - most likely an apprentice of some sort to the decoder ninjas - ran in, a carefully wrapped scroll in hand. Something looked rather odd about it.... "Kazekage-samaaaaa!" As if Kiyoshi hadn't heard him the first two times, the boy called out again, this time bowing before approaching. "An urgent message from the Fire Country. I was ordered to place it into your hands directly." It must be urgent, then. Of course! That was why the scroll looked odd; it was untouched. Normally the messages that came to him had been relieved of their outer wrappings, ready to unroll and read. What made this one so precious that it couldn't even be unwrapped before being delivered?
Kiyoshi nodded, and held out his hand. The boy approached, slid back the semi-transparent screen that separated Kiyoshi from the rest of the room, placed the scroll in his hand, slid the screen shut, bowed, and ran out without another word. Kiyoshi shook his head at the boy's odd behavior, and then turned his attention to the scroll.
Everything on the outside looked normal. It was marked from the Fire Country, as the most urgent of communications, and to be delivered untouched to him directly. However, it was once the outer wrappings were off that the scroll had his utmost curiosity and attention. This scroll was red and white.... the red and white that the Hokage of Konoha used in their official communications! What could Kaori be sending me that's this urgent? he wondered. This can't be good.
He gently unrolled the scroll, scanning its contents for anything that seemed of importance. The majority was written in the firm, steady handwriting he had been used to seeing for many years now, and said nothing out of the ordinary - just details concerning the upcoming ceremony. But what was this down at the end? It was scribbled in a hasty scrawl that was barely recognizable as Kaori's. When he read what this very different paragraph said, he nearly dropped the scroll.
A second later, he was out of his office, personally preparing a reply and readying the Sand for an emergency visit from Hidden Leaf Village.
