Sato Ai was born in The Hidden Village of Mist, but is a Konoha ninja through and through. Her parents are actually Konoha ANBU, but are posing as defectors in the Mist village as part of a long-term deep cover espionage operation that is still ongoing. Not wanting their daughter to grow up a heartless Mist shinobi, they secretly taught her the ways of Konoha in the evenings, and sent her to the Mist academy during the day. Despite much protest from other nations, the Mist still has not abandoned their barbaric Academy graduation exam, and in her test, Ai was forced to fight against her best friend since the time she was small. She still has nightmares to this day about holding her kusari-gama to Noriko’s throat and pleading for her to just submit and concede the match, that she wouldn’t kill her friend, no matter what the cost. Noriko acted as though she was going to give in and surrender, so Ai would loosen her hold. When Ai did, Noriko pulled a kunai and attempted to stab Ai in the heart, missing and only slashing her across the abdomen. Acting on sheer survival instinct, Ai carried the stroke through, slashing Noriko’s throat. She was scolded by her Jounin sensei for not ending the fight when she had the chance, and for not knowing enough about her enemy to realize that her enemy would try something of that sort. She still carries scars, both on her body and in her heart, and mind from that day.
She entered in the Chuunin exams as a Mist shinobi at the age of 14 and passed with a unanimous decision from the kage judges, showing that she was good enough to deserve the rank of Chuunin, but holding back enough that the foreign kages would not consider her a threat and deny her promotion. This was also the first time where Ai met the Kyudaime Hokage. Her parents used their positions as Mist ANBU to secure a meeting with the Hokage, under the guise of a diplomatic meeting, while Ai used Henge no Jutsu to seem to be the third member of the ANBU team, who was actually home with the flu. They gave a report to the Hokage, and then introduced their daughter to the Hokage, showing Kyudaime that Ai was really a Leaf shinobi at heart.
After another year, the strain of living in such a manner got to Ai, and she discussed with her parents running to Konoha. Her parents were not thrilled with the idea, but decided that Ai was more than old enough to make her own decisions, and that it would be better in the long run to get their daughter away from the horrors of Kirigakure. Giving her supplies, a masterfully crafted kusari-gama, a report to carry to the Hokage, and a kiss goodbye, they gave her their blessing and sent her on what would be her last Mist mission ever. It was an A-rank mission to deal with some rogue ninja who were unaffiliated with any village, but it was not expected to be a challenge for Ai’s team. While in combat with the rogue shinobi, at a point where it was becoming evident the Mist shinobi would win, Ai faked her own death with an explosive note, several jars of blood that she was carrying for this purpose, and her kunai pouch. Convinced that Ai was dead, her teammates returned to the village while Ai traveled to Konoha. Arriving at the village, Ai asked the gate guards to send the Hokage’s adjutant, along with a squad of ANBU, to prove that she intended no threat, to meet with her and take her to speak to the Hokage. After much deliberation, this was granted and Ai went to the Hokage, explaining the situation and delivering her parents’ report, which also included the Mist’s personnel folder on Ai and a plea from them to give her a position as a Leaf shinobi and to help her get on her feet in her new life.
The Council insisted that Ai be forced to go through the Academy like any Leaf shinobi to be. Laughing, she reported to the Academy and graduated in fifteen minutes, still a Konoha record to this day. She cheerfully accepted her new life as a Leaf Genin, patiently awaiting the time when the Chuunin exams came around so she could once more reclaim her rightful rank as a Chuunin, in the village that she had always loved.
When she arrived at her second Chuunin exams and the kages saw that she was registered to take it again, there was first a great outrage towards Konoha, the other leaders assuming that Konoha was trying to stack the deck in their own favor. When they found out that it was actually political nonsense that had Ai cutting grass and pulling weeds for a year, and that she had not said a single word of protest in a year’s time, they immediately gave her the rank of Chuunin as a message to Konoha’s (and all the other villages’) councils to stick to politics and leave shinobi business to… well… shinobi.
She has been a Chuunin in the Leaf since, doing missions as often a possible. Like every other Chuunin, she aspires one day to the title of ANBU, but for the meantime, she simply does what’s right towards enemy.
