So, I had a conversation a while back with someone, and they convinced me that Chidori was different than Raikiri. However, after watching the anime again, I'm conviced that Raikiri (Kakashi's move) is exactly the same as Chidori (that which Sasuke uses against Gaara, for example). I know this is one heck of a retro question, but I wanted to get it out of my mind once and for all. In fact, I'm sure they even make reference in the episode (66-67, anime) about them being the same thing. Are they the same thing?

Well.
From a basic standpoint, they are the same thing.
But they are actually two slightly different jutsu, with different rankings.
Chidori is the original, plain version. This jutsu is A-rank. Raikiri is Kakashi's super powered version. This jutsu is S-rank.
There's very little difference between the two... but Kakashi's is slightly stronger.
It's true.
lol.

See. There we go. Even now, we still have some uncertainty. Although Maz seems to base it on power. I thought it was a particularly noobish question. But if it has you two in disagreement, than it can't be a basic yes or no. XD

Well, think of it like this.
Chidori is, for this argument's sake, the equivalent of Kage Bunshin no Jutsu. Raikiri is the equivalent of Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.
In essence, both are the same, right? They're both, at their core, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu. But one is more powerful than the other; perhaps it requires more precise chakra control, or perhaps just requires more chakra than the other. I don't know exactly what Naruto does differently to perform the two jutsu - the hand seals are the same, stances, etc... it all looks exactly the same. Regardless, the techniques are different somehow... and it is this difference that makes Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu the more powerful of the two.
It would be something similar that separates Raikiri from Chidori. Whether Kakashi puts more chakra into Raikiri, or perhaps there's more chakra control... it would be a small difference, but a small enough difference to make it more powerful than Chidori.
Make sense?
I'd have to say, it's not really a noobish question. It does have a difficult answer, as we see here. I might even be inclined to say it's a good, valid question. XD

lol. Bold ftw. Well, you seem set on that answer...so I guess I'll wait and see if anyone else contradicts you, if not...I guess I'll take it as the truth.

Actually, they are one and the same. Kakashi himself says this when Sasuke uses it during the Chuunin exams. Sure, it's evolved over time as its creator has grown in strength, but when you get down to basics, it's still the same technique. The difference? Chidori is its real name, while Raikiri is the name other people gave to the technique when word got out that Kakashi used it to cut a blade of lightning. Two names, one technique.

This is true. It's just a bit weird though. I've found out they are the same. These translations are from the Naruto Databook. ChidoriRaikiri* In Chidori, it says that when Kakashi performs it, it becomes Raikiri * In Raikiri, it explains that Raikiri is Kakashi's version of Chidori I'm still a bit iffy about the whole thing though. Because Raikiri is more powerful, there must be SOMETHING different about it... even though they're the same. Perhaps, as K-chan said.... Kakashi's mastery of Chidori gives it the S-rank strength. That seems a bit lame though. Seriously, just because someone else does it, it's got a different name? "IT'S MY ATTACK I WANT A DIFFERENT NAME TO WHEN U DO IT NOOB U CAN'T CALL IT RAIKIRI" XD

Raikiri isn't its actual name, Maz. That's where your confusion is, I think. Raikiri is just a nickname. In fact, Kakashi seemed a little miffed when someone called it Raikiri in front of him. XD
