Pope John Paul II is no longer among us, and now Conclave is beginning in the Vattican in the search for the next Pope.
Now, I'm not a follower of the Catholic Faith, nor did I know a great deal about the Pope until his later years...but I will say that he did accomplish much for his religion.
This thread is for comments, kind words and opinions on the passing of John Paul II

While I'm not Catholic, I have a great respect for Pope John Paul II. He really was an impressive man. Not impressive as far as in himself, but he affected a lot of people in positive ways. I only hope the next pope can even begin to stand up to his legacy.
His death is a shame. I know he'll be sorely missed by many people.

His death is truly a shame, but I have every trust that he's now in Heaven with God, where he should be. He was a great man who accomplished so much that it's almost impossible to believe of a single person. He will be sorely missed, but I find comfort in where he is now and how he passed - peacefully, without suffering. I saw on the online news that he may be a candidate for sainthood, and I hope that they do proclaim him as a saint. Even though my beliefs on the meaning of sainthood don't exactly agree with the Catholic church, I think it's a fitting recognition of what a true servant of God accomplished.

Not only that, but a Polish servant of God.
Up until him, all previous Popes had been Italian (I my memory serves).
I remember there was a fair amount of controvercy* because of his nationality...and he still achieved much.
*spelling = bad

Not all of them, but he is the first non-Italian Pope in about 455 years (Not 100% sure about the exact number but it's something close to that).

Yeah, Kaori's right. He's not the first, necessarily, but the first in a while....

True true. John paul was not the first. My dad knows the name of the first one im pretty sure (my dad knows alot of uselass info) John paul did alot for the catholics. What annoyed me was when people made the joke of who was gonna die first. Billy Graham or The Pope.

That's not quite as bad as the old Mac Hall comic. Although, in that case it exists solely for humor. Right? I mean, nobody wants to diss someone as sw337 as the Pope.. right? ....*backs away from advancing boardmembers* Hey, c'mon... I was just funnin'....
