"Not far" Nada responded to Iro's question.
~~~~~~
After a short bit of walking, the group reached their destination. Nada-sensei led them into her house, and called out, "Tadaima!" and was shortly answered by, "O kaeri from another room ofthe house.
Nada-sensei led them all into the kitchen.
"Ready to start my first mission sensei!"
Maz stepped inside, and took his shoes off. He followed the group to the kitchen. He looked around. Nice place.
He was semi-scared, but tried not to show it. Instead, he just folded his arms and stood, looking uninterested. What a Squall.
But... I guess he'd give it a go.
(OoC: Aye? I was halfway through writing a post... lol)
Kohana followed Nada-sensei into the house and into the kitchen. It was time to begin their first mission! Cooking their picnic lunch!
"Ready to start my first mission sensei!" Iro said.
"Me, too!" Kohana added, beaming with delight, clasping her hands together, letting out a squeal.
"Me, too!" Kohana nearly squealed. Even Maz seemed fairly excited to start this "mission".
Iro could barely hold back his own excitement. He finally got a chance to gague the rest of his team up close.
Nada felt herself begin to relax as she grinned at the three and started looking for ingredients. So far, so good. Then again, they weren't actually cooking yet. "Everybody wash your hands, okay?" she said. Standard procedure. She dug around in a few cabinets and managed to find ingredients for tempura. After all those were located, she searched around until she found all the necessary cooking utensils. With everything laid out, she too washed her hands. Then, turning to her team, she grinned. Time to assign tasks. "Okay." She looked over the three of them. "Iro, I want you to wash all the vegetables and shrimp. When he's done, Maz, I want you to cut up the vegetables." She pointed to the various things she had laid out on the counter: carrots, green onions, mushrooms... she had a wide variety of vegetables. "You can pick what you want to put in." Giving him free reign might be interesting. She turned to Kohana next. "I'm putting you in charge of preparing the shrimp. After Iro finishes cleaning them, just cut off the heads and then cut them into little pieces." She looked over a package of tempura flour and studied the instructions. "I'll make the batter." This would be the easy part. They could definitely handle this. "When we finish that, we'll go from there." (I got the recipe from here, in case you want to read it. ;D)
"Everybody wash your hands, okay?" Nada-sensei said to the team.
After Iro finished washing his hands, followed by the rest of the group, Nada-sensei continued in her instructions.
"Okay," she said looking over the group, "Iro, I want you to wash all the vegetables and shrimp. When he's done, Maz, I want you to cut up the vegetables." she said as she pointed to some ingredients she had laid out. "You can pick what you want to put in" she said to Maz.
Hmmmm, well hopefully he has good taste.
"I'm putting you in charge of preparing the shrimp. After Iro finishes cleaning them, just cut off the heads and then cut them into little pieces" she said turning to Kohana.
My job seems simple enough so far.
"I'll make the batter," she said looking confident, "when we finish that, we'll go from there."
I can handle this.
Iro took all of the vegetables and shrimp and promptly proceeded to wash them. After a few minutes he had finished with the cleaning.
"All finished Nadameru-sensei!" Iro said with pride when he finished.
"Yeah, sure thing."
Great. He got the cutting part. That wasn't too hard... but it sure would've been nice if he'd had Kage-ryu-ken. Even though you don't really use a katana for cutting vegetables, he was adept with the Adarakis Blade. Plus maybe he could...
...no, that jutsu was out of the question anyway. He'd just have to do things the old-fashioned way.
He grabbed a sharp knife, and let out a quiet, low-pitched, childish "Wahaha." Evil Maz.
See, the thing about Maz was that he wasn't actually TOO bad at cooking. Just, he was never any good at selecting ingredients. His fish, honey, onion and miso soup concoction was disgusting.
Iro grabbed and finished washing the vegetables that lay on the bench - as judge of what went in and what didn't, Maz wasn't too fussed about any of them. Apart from perhaps pumpkin. But he wasn't entirely sure about what was go well with what. He supposed all the taste would be drowned out with miso soup... when he had tempura it came in a bowl of soup*, so that was how he supposed it was made.
He turned to his team-mates, and as they got to work, he asked them "Are there any particular vegetables you guys don't want? I mean, I'm... not too fussed about anything here, so I mean..."
"...and... will we be having miso soup, too?" He directed this mainly at Nadameru, their leader, but anyone could answer.
Regardless of whether he liked his new team-mates or not, he wanted this in particular to work - to work as a team. Whether that was his brain or his stomach talking though, none shall ever know.
* When I had tempura (in Japan, too! lol) I had it in a bowl of miso soup. I don't know who's tried tempura before, so... XD
"I'm so hungry right now, I'm happy with any of them" Iro said with a smile, still beaming over his 'wash job'.
Well now, the exercise seemed to be working. Everyone was so anxious not to mess up, that even Maz had forgotten to be grumpy.
"Everybody wash your hands, okay?" Nada-sensei said. She then turned to search for ingredients and the utensils. After laying out what they would need, and washing her hands as well, she assigned everybody their tasks. Iro was put to cleaning the veggies and shrimp, and Maz was put to cutting up the veggies. And Kohana's job was to slice up the shrimp after Iro had cleaned them.
Kohana stood ready next to Iro, to do her designated task. And, surprisingly, even Maz looked some-what excited about their first mission! Maybe this wouldn't turn out to be such a bad team after all!
Iro answered, "I'm so hungry right now, I'm happy with any of them."
Sounds good, I guess. Maz nodded in reply.
Taking the cleaned vegetables, Maz unleashed chopping fury upon them. Something he was good at. He sliced the carrots into little round bits, before proceeding to work on whatever else was there. He made a note not to include pumpkin in the final mix.
Moments later, the vegetables were all chopped up and raring to go, ready to be covered in batter.
"Alright, the vegies are done."
Nada was busy preparing the oil to deep fry the tempura in when Maz presented her with a question.
"... will we be having miso soup, too?" Maz asked. The jounin thought about that for a moment. It would be good, she supposed, to have something with the tempura. Not to mention she was certain they had all of the ingredients. She could put Iro and Maz on miso duty. Finally, she nodded.
"Miso soup sounds good. Maz, Iro, why don't you two work on that? Kohana and I can fry the tempura in the meantime." At their assent, she finished up the batter and gathered up the ingredients for the miso.
They had all finished their first assignments quite well. After giving Maz and Iro a run down of what to do for the miso (she would be checking on them frequently, for certain) she demonstrated to Kohana how to dip the filling in the batter and fry it.
Working with hot oil was probably a gamble, but hopefully it would proceed without incident.
"Oh, I can handle it by myself..."
Maz grabbed some green onions and other ingredients and chopped them up to prepare for the soup. Grabbing a pot, he filled it up with water and added the hard ingredients (as following the instructions on the back of the miso pack). He placed it on the heat and started to boil the water. While it was boiling, he looked at what the others were doing.
It was then that he wondered if he should let Iro do some of the work too.
"Oh, I can handle it by myself..."
Nadameru paused from helping Kohana at those words. Normally, she wouldn't have minded someone saying that. Truth be told, the jounin wasn't much of a people person, so she understood how working alone could be preferable.
However, this was a group activity. A group activity! She smiled weakly and decided to let Maz and Iro work it out on their own. Something in Mazrakiel's earlier hesitance led her to believe he wasn't a particularly skilled cook. She didn't know if he was particularly bad, but maybe he would realize that having Iro's help would be better.
With that, the jounin concluded that train of thought and went back to assisting Kohana fry the tempura.
The water had finally reached boiling point after a while. Maz was gonna finish this off. It was his idea anyway.
Following the rest of the instructions on the back of the packet, he proceeded to finish off making the miso soup, adding the rest of the ingerdients. It wasn't too hard...
...wait a sec, did the packet say... "Make sure the water DOESN'T boil"...?
...uh oh, he thought to himself.
He hoped nobody'd notice this mistake. Believing himself to be done with the instructions - the soup was more or less done - he placed the packet in the bin; after asking Nadameru where it was. It wouldn't make TOO much of a difference to the taste... would it? He hoped not, as he and his team were about to find out, the hard way. (and for that matter, he didn't wanna let them down)
"Uh, the soup's ready, I think."
He hoped.
Iro listened as Maz once again began blurting out how great he was. After a couple of minutes, Maz spoke again.
"Uh, the soup's ready, I think. "
There was something about the way he spoke that caught Iro's ear; hesitance. Awesome, this might finally put the showoff in his place Iro thought to himself.
"Is there anything else I can do to help Nadameru-sensei?
